Call for Abstracts

The Better Worlds Conference 2010 is looking for exciting and innovative ideas to fill out its list of presenters. If you are a motivated and creative undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in science, engineering, or social sciences and you have huge ideas, we want to give you the opportunity to showcase your mind to the people who can make your ideas a reality.

Better Worlds is looking for ideas that answer this question: “If resources were no object, what would you do in your field that would change the world?”

It’s a big question, and we want the biggest answers. In the first round, applicants submit an “abstract” of their idea for review by our volunteers, a group of gifted and talented individuals who believe in your ideas and what they can do for humanity. An abstract in this case is a one-page summary of your idea. Full guidelines appear below. Keep in mind, though, that if you are selected as a finalist you may need to produce a 20 minute presentation or poster around your idea. For the first round, we’re going to select abstracts based on the following equally weighted criteria:

Creativity
Benefit
Feasibility
Write your abstracts with these principles to guide you.

Accessibility Statement: The Better Worlds Conference is interested in all people who are thinking big. We welcome submissions from all persons of all ethnic groups, religions, genders, sexual orientations, and nationalities. The quality of your ideas is the only thing that we will judge. We want you.

Please Note, however: You must be a current student in good standing at an accredited undergraduate or graduate educational institution to present at Better Worlds 2010. In the future we plan to open conferences for other groups, so check back!

Abstract Submission Guidelines

Thanks for your interest in the 2010 Better Worlds Conference. With your submission, we will ask for:

Your name. Joint submissions are allowed, but only one member will be able to attend the conference due to capacity.

The title of your submission.

The abstract. Summarize your idea. A good abstract is simultaneously complete, concise, and readable. Abstracts must be no longer than one page with 1″ margins, 1.5-spaced in size 12 Times New Roman or equivalent serif font in black. No exceptions. Please be sure to include both the title and all authors’ names. Optionally, you may include a second page with diagrams, photographs, or other figures. The entire document should be submitted in PDF, RTF, or DOC format.

Contact information. email address, mailing address, and phone number. We intend to use email for the vast majority of our contact with you, but please do include alternate forms just in case.

Your résumé. This is not required, but is appreciated. Résumés should be submitted in PDF, RTF, or DOC format. Please use the same formatting requirements as for your abstract, except that this document may be up to two pages. While this information may be useful in the selection process, the Better Worlds Conference cares far more about your ideas than about your credentials.

You will receive a confirmation email once we have received your submission. Please note that the deadline for submissions is TBA.

By TBA we will notify the semifinalists from the Call for Abstracts. If you are selected as a semifinalist, you will be required to submit a short presentation or video for us to review, and we encourage you to be prepared with this material in case you are chosen.

If you have any questions about the submission process, please feel free to email us at betterworldsconference@gmail.com.
